The Most Dangerous Place to Ride a Bicycle is Pinellas County
According to the Wall Street Journal, the deadliest place in the country to ride a bicycle is the same place we call home. This is alarming news. Florida has been found to be home to the top four ranking areas in bicycle deaths.
The Tampa Bay metro area was found to be the most dangerous area (with Pinellas County having the highest bicyclist death rate within the area), followed by Jacksonville, Orlando, and Miami. The fatality rate for bicyclists in Tampa Bay was about 7 deaths per 100,000 residents, which is the highest rate for any metro area in the U.S.
Why is Pinellas County so Dangerous to Bicyclists?
WSJ cites tourist driving who are not familiar with Pinellas County roads, as well as drunk drivers and distracted drivers, all combined in a very densely populated area. Our tropical climate and beach proximity means it’s more likely pedestrians and bicyclists will be outside, especially if the weather is nice.
The Florida Department of Transportation is striving to make bicycle safety one of their top priorities, from identifying high-crash areas to improving lighting on popular biking streets. State grants are funding these improvements. Police agencies have also recently launched a new campaign to ensure more officers are in areas where more cyclists are. There is much room for improvement to ensure bicyclists and pedestrians are safe in Pinellas County.
