Crashes caused by wrong way drivers are not uncommon in the Tampa Bay area. Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Pasco counties are among the top counties in Florida for wrong way driver crashes.
The Florida Department of Safety and Motor Vehicles found in that in 2015, Florida had 1,490 wrong-way crashes and 96 fatalities. The report stated that of the top counties for wrong-way driving crashes in Florida, Hillsborough was fourth, Pinellas was sixth and Pasco was eighth.
Most wrong way crashes happen in late evening or early morning. This could be attributed to signs being harder to read at night, or the likelihood of impaired drivers on the roadways at these times. The majority of wrong way drivers in Tampa Bay are found to be legally impaired by drugs or alcohol.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) urges drivers to stay in the right lane if possible when driving at night, as most fatal wrong way crashes tend to occur in the left or center lane.
Remember the importance of staying awake and alert, especially at nighttime hours. If you are driving and see a wrong way driver on the road, slow down and pull off the road. Then call 911 as soon as it is safe to do so.
