A recent report by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) showed that only 61% of drunk drivers are convicted of their charges. The information in this report was collected from September 1, 2017 to September 1, 2018. The conviction rate is down 7 percent from the previous year.
MADD has staff and volunteers that regularly monitor judicial proceedings relating to drunk driving cases. Currently the program covers 12 states throughout the country, but that number is increasing to create a more accurate portrayal of the country’s data. The goal of this monitoring is to ensure drunk driving laws are being enforced and prosecuted. Those involved document information regarding each case, and find trends and weaknesses to report to prosecutors and judges. MADD’s goal is to send a message that driving drunk will not be tolerated.
Drunk driving is the #1 cause of fatal automobile accidents in Florida. In 2016-2017, there were almost 11,000 fatalities due alcohol-impaired drivers. Throughout the country, the average cost of a first-time DUI is around $10,000, but that does not deter people from getting behind the wheel and driving under the influence.
