What to Do After an Accident

Being involved in a car accident can be overwhelming. Directly after a collision you are most likely shaken up, perhaps injured and a little scared. How do you know whether or not you need a lawyer? What are the long-term effects of this accident? There’s no way to know exactly what will happen at this point. However, there are steps you can take immediately that will make it easier if you do later decide you need an attorney to help with your case.

Immediately After an Accident

If possible, check with everyone involved and make sure there are no major injuries. The top priority is safety. Call 911 if there are injuries to get police and emergency personnel on the scene. Even if there are no injuries, the police should still be notified if there is significant damage or if anyone involved is acting in a way that makes you feel unsafe.

Next, it is time to start gathering information. Exchange names and insurance information with the other party. If possible, get photos of the vehicles involved and document all information possible on the vehicles, including license plate number, and year/make/model/color as well as insurance information. If there are any witnesses, document their names and phone numbers.

Make sure to remain cooperative with the police and insurance companies throughout this process. Continue to take notes and request documentation – If you do file a claim, it’s always best to have as much information as possible.

Later On

After the accident, you are bound to have some losses. If you have an injury, keep track of any medical treatment you have had, medications, medical providers, and referrals. Also keep track of how any injuries have affected your life, from missed work to hindered physical activity.
If there are no medical expenses, you still may have missed work or had to take a cab, or had other personal property in your car that was damaged. Save receipts and document everything you can regarding expenses you are paying due to the accident.

Consider an Attorney

Hiring an attorney is not always necessary, but in many cases is an important step. Your insurance company will likely instruct you on how to file a claim. Early settlement offers may seem appealing, but be wary of accepting, as it may prevent you from receiving any further medical treatment. Our attorneys at Jones Law Group are experienced, and offer a free consultation to review your claim. Even if you eventually decide you don’t need an attorney, it is always good to get a second opinion from an experienced attorney.
