Being involved in a car accident can be overwhelming. Directly after a collision you are most likely shaken up, perhaps injured and a little scared. How do you know whether or not you need a lawyer? If possible, check with everyone involved and make sure there are no major injuries. The top priority is safety. Call 911 if there are injuries to get police and emergency personnel on the scene. Next, it is time to start gathering information. Exchange names and insurance information with the other party. After the accident, you are bound to have some losses. If you have an injury, keep track of any medical treatment you have had, medications, medical providers, and referrals. Also keep track of how any injuries have affected your life, from missed work to hindered physical activity.
If there are no medical expenses, you still may have missed work or had to take a cab, or had other personal property in your car that was damaged. Save receipts and document everything you can regarding expenses you are paying due to the accident.
