Every year, Allstate publishes a report ranking the safest and most dangerous cities to drive in across America. Their actuaries pull two years of claims data from the largest 200 cities, weight the numbers, and compare each city’s accident rate against the national average. Since Allstate insures roughly 10% of all drivers in the country, the sample size is hard to argue with.
The baseline finding: the average American driver gets into a collision once every 10 years.
How Often Do Car Accidents Happen in Florida?
Florida consistently ranks among the most dangerous states for drivers. The combination of heavy tourist traffic, a large elderly driving population, congested urban corridors, and year-round sun glare creates conditions that push accident rates well above the national average in most major metros. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the state sees hundreds of thousands of reported crashes every year, resulting in tens of thousands of serious injuries.
Fort Collins is the safest city in America. It’s taken the top spot four times in the Allstate report, and in the entire 10-year history of the study, only three cities have ever held it: Fort Collins, CO; Sioux Falls, SD; and Cedar Rapids, IA. Fort Collins drivers ranked first or second in every category Allstate measured.
In Florida, Cape Coral leads. Cape Coral drivers are 15.5% less likely to be in an accident than the national average, averaging 11.8 years between accidents versus the national 10. Tallahassee also came in above average. Those were the only two Florida cities that did.
Jacksonville and St. Petersburg are worth noting as most-improved. Both cities made significant jumps in the rankings and now sit right around the national average. St. Petersburg drivers in particular hold up well in poor weather and low-visibility conditions.
The rest of Florida’s major metros are a different story. Tampa, Orlando, and Miami rank near the bottom nationally. Tampa drivers are 30.5% more likely to crash than drivers in St. Petersburg, getting into accidents every 7.7 years on average. Over a lifetime, that gap adds up to two or three extra collisions per driver.
The worst drivers in America, per Allstate, are in Massachusetts. Worcester, Boston, and Springfield occupy three of the bottom four spots nationwide. Drivers there are more than 100% more likely to be in an accident than the national average, with collisions happening every five years or less.
Florida’s No-Fault Insurance System
Florida is a no-fault state, which means after a car accident your own insurance pays your initial medical bills and lost wages regardless of who caused the crash. Florida requires drivers to carry Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage up to $10,000. That sounds like a cushion until you realize a single ER visit, imaging, and follow-up specialist appointments can burn through it fast. Once PIP is exhausted, recovering additional compensation means stepping outside the no-fault system entirely — and that requires proving a serious injury under Florida’s legal threshold.
When to Hire a Car Accident Lawyer in Florida
Insurance adjusters work for the insurance company. Their job is to close your claim for as little as possible. That’s not cynicism — it’s how the business works.
You should talk to a lawyer any time an accident resulted in more than minor vehicle damage, any injury that required medical attention, lost time from work, or a dispute over fault. The more serious the injury, the more critical that conversation becomes.
Insurers move fast. Adjusters often reach out within days of an accident with a settlement offer. Early offers are almost always low, and once you accept you waive your right to any future compensation — even if your injuries turn out to be more serious than they first appeared. A lawyer can tell you whether an offer is fair before you sign anything.
Some situations make legal help non-negotiable: if the other driver was uninsured or underinsured, if a commercial vehicle was involved, if a government entity played any role, or if you’re being blamed for an accident that wasn’t your fault. Personal injury attorneys in Florida work on contingency, meaning you pay nothing unless they recover compensation for you.

Most people who’ve been hurt in an accident assume they don’t have a case — or that what the insurance company offered is just what it is. Sometimes that’s true. More often it isn’t.
Florida’s personal injury laws have real teeth, but they also have deadlines and fine print that can quietly kill a valid claim. Miss the 14-day window to see a doctor after a car accident and you may lose access to $10,000 in PIP benefits you already paid for. Wait longer than two years to file and your case is gone entirely, regardless of how clear-cut the fault was.
If you were hurt in an accident in the St. Petersburg or Tampa Bay area and you’re not sure where you stand, the only bad move is doing nothing.
Each year, thousands of people die in large commercial truck accidents. In 2019, there were 4,119 fatalities as a result of these crashes. 67% of all fatalities were occupants of passenger vehicles, while 16% were truck occupants. The remaining 17% were vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists. These accidents can be devastating, […]
The Wall Street Journal once named St. Petersburg the most dangerous city in America for bicyclists. The crashes haven’t spread evenly. They concentrate at specific intersections: 34th Street and Fairfield Avenue, 34th Street and 5th Avenue South, 4th Street North and 5th Avenue North, and the Pinellas Trail’s road crossings. This guide breaks down the intersection-level data, who’s getting hit (commuters, e-bike riders, delivery cyclists, tourists), and what to do if you go down on a St. Pete street.
We’ve all heard stories about people falling asleep at the wheel, and the often tragic results. But driving while tired can greatly increase the chances of an accident as well. According to the CDC, driving while fatigued can drastically slow driver reaction times for sudden braking or steering, and make it harder for the driver […]
