Florida is dangerous for bicyclists, and bias against cyclists is one of the biggest reasons.
Why is this the case? One reason is that drivers often see bicyclists as a nuisance or obstacle on the road, leading to frustration and negative attitudes toward them. Drivers may need help understanding or following the laws and regulations regarding the rights of bicyclists to use the road, leading to conflicts and dangerous situations. Another reason is that some people may view bicyclists as inexperienced or reckless, which can lead to a bias against them.
Also, some drivers may not be aware of the vulnerability of bicyclists in case of a collision, which can lead to a lack of empathy or consideration for their safety.
Yes, Florida drivers must share the road with bicycle riders. According to Florida state law, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers of motor vehicles. This means that drivers must give bicyclists the same amount of space as other vehicles and not impede their safe operation. Additionally, drivers are required to yield the right-of-way to bicyclists at crosswalks, sidewalks, and bike lanes and only to pass a bicyclist if it is safe to do so.
Florida law also requires bicyclists to follow the same rules of the road as drivers, including obeying traffic signals and signs, signaling turns and lane changes, and riding with the flow of traffic.
There were 206 bicycle fatalities across Florida in 2022. These are just three examples of how bias against cyclists can have tragic results.
Better infrastructure for cyclists, such as dedicated bike lanes, protected intersections and roundabouts, and improved signage and signals, could help reduce the number of accidents involving bicyclists.
Dedicated bike lanes provide a separate space for bicyclists to ride, which can reduce conflicts and improve visibility for both bicyclists and drivers. Protected intersections and roundabouts can also improve safety by separating bicyclists from motor vehicles and providing clear and direct routes.
Improved signage and signals can help alert drivers to the presence of bicyclists. It can also make it easier for bicyclists to navigate the road.
Infrastructure for cyclists could also include the following:
If you are hit by a car while on your bicycle, there are a few critical steps you should take to ensure your safety:
Don’t talk to the driver’s insurance company without consulting with your attorney. Be careful when giving statements to the insurance company, as they may try to use your words against you.
Remember that your safety and well-being always come first. It’s essential that you follow the proper steps in the aftermath of an accident to protect your rights.

By: Heath C. Murphy + – Personal Injury People do not tend too think much of loaning their cars to friends and relatives. They probably should. Suppose you loan your car to a friend and they happen to pull out in front of a motorcycle causing an accident. Now you did your due diligence and […]
Motorcycle accidents are, unfortunately, all-too common occurrences on Florida roads. Drivers or four-wheel vehicles can be to blame in a lot of instances, but riders are also responsible in a lot of instances. But if motorcyclists take the right precautions, they’ll have a much better chance of avoiding potential disaster. The attorneys with Jones Law […]
I have written about bicycle safety, in general. I have written about the dangers of being doored on a bicycle. I have not written about how parents can keep their kids safe on their bikes. Parents, the more you are educated on the subject and the more you teach your children about bicycle safety, the […]
Most people who’ve been hurt in an accident assume they don’t have a case — or that what the insurance company offered is just what it is. Sometimes that’s true. More often it isn’t.
Florida’s personal injury laws have real teeth, but they also have deadlines and fine print that can quietly kill a valid claim. Miss the 14-day window to see a doctor after a car accident and you may lose access to $10,000 in PIP benefits you already paid for. Wait longer than two years to file and your case is gone entirely, regardless of how clear-cut the fault was.
If you were hurt in an accident in the St. Petersburg or Tampa Bay area and you’re not sure where you stand, the only bad move is doing nothing.
Speak with us before time runs out! In Florida, you have a limited window to file a personal injury case, so speak to an Attorney today.
